Eva May Pierce, a proud Vinton resident and William Byrd High School graduate, has recently
achieved an important academic and artistic milestone. On May 15th, she received her Master of
Music Performance degree from James Madison University, marking the culmination of years of
dedication to her craft and education.

She graduated summa cum laude from Elon University with a degree in music Performance
before continuing her graduate studies at JMU. A gifted vocalist, Pierce was honored with the
opportunity to sing the National Anthem at her graduation ceremony—an honor reserved for top-
performing students—and later performed the university’s Alma Mater to close out the
celebration.

In addition to her academic and musical achievements, Pierce received the Accessibility and
Belonging Academic Award from JMU. The award recognized her work with the university’s
Department of SOGIE (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression), where she helped
plan and organize events that promoted campus-wide inclusion and connection.
“Working with the community through JMU’s Accessibility and Belonging Department showed
me how vital the work of inclusion is,” Pierce said. “When everyone has a seat at the table,
everyone benefits. I hope to continue integrating the arts and social justice in my career.”
Looking ahead, Pierce plans to remain in Harrisonburg for the time being so she can continue
studying with her voice teacher, Dr. Brigid Eversole, further developing her voice and preparing
for future auditions and singing opportunities. With her growing experience in both performance
and community engagement, she looks forward to a future filled with music, service, and
continued personal growth.
Pierce expressed heartfelt thanks to her family, friends, and mentors for their ongoing support
throughout her academic and personal journey.
