Over 100 gifted and talented students from Roanoke City, Roanoke County, and the Roanoke Valley Governor’s School (RVGS) competed in the 2017 Western Virginia Regional Science and Engineering Fair held at Hollins University on March 4.
Byrd High School and RVGS student Richard Qiu won first place in the Materials Science/Physics and Astronomy category and was named Grand Award Alternate of the regional science fair with his project “A Novel Hybrid Hydrogel– Preparation, Characterization, and Applications.” He will advance to compete at the Virginia Science and Engineering Fair on March 25 at VMI in Lexington.
WBHS students Ryan James and Stephen Olsen won fourth place in Robotics and Intelligent Machines with their project, “The Engineering of an Automated Task Completing Robot.” They also attend RVGS.
Other Roanoke County students who placed at the Roanoke County Science Fair for secondary students held at William Byrd Middle School on February 18 advanced to the regional science fair at Hollins as well.
Adithya Iyer from William Byrd Middle School was awarded first place at the regional fair in the Earth and Environmental B category and was also one of two Broadcom Award winners.
Hannah Sutton from WBMS won second place in the Engineering Mechanics division.
Kavya Iyer from William Byrd High School won fourth place in the Materials Science/Physics and Astronomy category.
