Members of Vinton Town Council and department heads spent the morning on March 4 cleaning up sections of Vinton from Lake Drive Plaza to Lynn Haven Baptist on Washington Avenue to Mountain View Avenue. Some of those participating included (from left): Mayor Brad Grose, Human Resources Director Donna Collins, Town Manager Barry Thompson, Police Chief Tom Foster, Deputy Fire and EMS Chief Chris Linkous, Public Works Director Joey Hiner, Bud LaRoche, Special Programs Director Mary Beth Layman, and Councilwoman Janet Scheid.

Clean Valley Day in the Roanoke Valley is scheduled for Saturday, April 1. Members of Vinton Town Council and the town’s leadership team (made up of department directors) held their own Vinton Clean-Up Day on March 4. Town Manager Barry Thompson said this was the result of the Lake Drive Shopping Center Recycling Center closing on March 1.

“Councilwoman Janet Scheid challenged council and department heads to come out for the special clean-up day and get a head start on the spring clean-up,” said Thompson.

“We wanted to get the area where the Recycling Center was cleared up, Clearview up to Broadhill, and where the trash blows toward BNC Bank, down Hardy Road toward CVS, and the houses on Hardy Road,” added Thompson. “We also cleaned ByPass Road to Washington Avenue, Washington Avenue to Lynn Haven Baptist Church, and on Mountain View Road from the town limits to Meadows Road.”

That covers a lot of space.

“The crews worked from 9 a.m. until around noon,” Thompson said. “It was a very productive day!”

Those who took on the challenge included: Mayor Brad Grose, Councilwoman Scheid and her husband Bud LaRoche, Councilman Keith Liles, Public Works Director Joey Hiner, Police Chief Tom Foster, Human Resources Director Donna Collins, Deputy Fire and EMS Chief Chris Linkous, Special Programs Director Mary Beth Layman, and Town Manager Barry Thompson and his wife Margarete Thompson. Will Cummings, son of Det. Sgt. Valerie Cummings, also participated.

Councilwoman Sabrina McCarty and her husband Chris McCarty got a head start and picked up debris at BNC Bank on March 3.
