VINTON–Officer Terry Pittman has been named Vinton’s Police Officer of the Month for July 2015. On July 20, Officer Pittman responded to the report of a shoplifter at the Kroger store on Hardy Road.

According to Vinton Police Chief Ben Cook, during the course of the investigation, Pittman determined that the suspect had stolen cans of baby formula and diapers for his eight month old child because he didn’t have any money.

“Officer Pittman took appropriate enforcement action and the suspect was free to leave at the completion of the investigation,” said Cook. “However, before the suspect left the store, Officer Pittman purchased formula and diapers and gave them to him so he could provide for his child. His compassion for others and understanding of the situation helped someone in need and his actions certainly reflect well on the department, the Town, and the law enforcement profession.”

Officer Pittman was recognized by Vinton Town Council at their meeting on August 18.
