Jones is runnerup for sandlot coach award

Brian Jones of the Vinton Youth Boosters was a runnerup up for the Subway® Standout Coach Award for 2018.

Shawn Sprouse of Roanoke was awarded the title of the 2018 Subway® Standout Coach for his dedication to young athletes in the North Roanoke Recreation Club (NRRC). Sprouse received a whistle and $500 Subway® Gift Card, along with $250 in Subway® catering for his team.

“It was a surprise,” said Sprouse, who grew up playing baseball with NRRC and began coaching NRRC teams five years ago. He coached his son Andrew’s 10U baseball team  and his oldest son Nathan, 13, will be playing in the All Star games this weekend. In addition to volunteering, Shawn is a small business owner of SDS Photography Inc. in Roanoke.

Jones, who coached the Vinton Orioles AAA Dixie League team, and three other runner-up coaches were selected to receive a $100 Subway® Gift Card for their support of community athletics; George V. Henderson of the Pittsylvania County Youth Sports Leagues, Joe Lackey of the Maroon Crush Softball Team in Botetourt and Novel Martin of Hidden Valley Youth Sports Association in Roanoke.
