The William Byrd girls dropped a 13-10 decision to Hidden Valley in
lacrosse Monday night, but the game was highlighted by Annika Hylton’s 100 th
career goal.
Hylton, a junior, found the net late in the third quarter in a close game at
Roanoke County’s Bogle Stadium. It was her third goal of the night and the 100th
of her career as she closes in on the school record of 109 by Madeline Pruzan.
It’s been a tough couple years for Hylton, who lost her mother to cancer in
2021 and has used lacrosse to power through the tough times. She’s been a bright
spot on the Terrier team as the girls have lost some close games, including
Monday’s game with Hidden Valley that was tied late in the second half before
the host Titans prevailed.
“It’s an impressive achievement to make that milestone in her junior
season,” said Byrd coach Dan Eberhardt. “ I also anticipate she will set the team
goal record this year.”
Samantha Martin has also been hot as she scored five goals in Monday’s
game. Barb Hernandez made five saves in goal to keep the Terriers in the game as
they dropped to 1-4 on the season.
Byrd was scheduled to be back in action on Wednesday with a trip to
Jefferson Forest. Next Monday, April 15, the girls will host Salem at Patterson
Stadium in Vinton.
