William Fleming was the site of the 52^nd annual Cosmopolitan Invitational Track meet last weekend and it was a big time for some William Byrd athletes.

Senior Division titles went to the William Fleming boys and Pulaski County girls while Junior titles, for ninth and 10 graders, went to the Northside boys and Christiansburg girls. Blacksburg won the girls’ middle school championship and Read Mountain won the boys’ title.

Byrd’s Senior girls were 12^th and the boys were 17^th among 21 schools to score. In the Junior Division the Terrier girls were sixth and the boys were ninth, and in the Middle School meet Byrd’s boys were ninth and the girls were 16^th.

“With the ability to enter three athletes in each event in two divisions it really helps to get the entire team involved in a big meet,” said Byrd coach Eric Royal. “For the younger ones and middle schoolers this is the largest meet they have been involved in.  Close to 1800 athletes run, jumped or threw.”

The Junior girls saw several individuals place as well as the 4×400 relay place, which took second with the foursome of Evie Laherty, Kiely Fletcher, Morgan Fletchall and Erin Wienke.

Wienke took second in the Junior 800 and sixth in the 1,600.

“This is a tough race,” said Royal. “You have to have endurance, speed and apply race strategy. Erin has all of these things.  The other factor that makes this a tough race for her is she knew she had two more races after this one and had the 800 prelim the night before.”

Fletchall was third in the 800 after being seeded seventh, and Laherty was sixth in the 400.

In the boys’ Junior meet Greyson Cornett won both the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles and also was named Junior boys’ “Runner of the Meet.”

“Running the 300 hurdles is one of the tougher races in high school track,” said Royal. “Speed, agility and stamina is what it takes to get to the finish. It hurts to run them, not many are willing to do them.”

Hunter Bohon finished 7^th in the 300 hurdles, sixth in the 110 highs and third in the triple jump.

In the varsity meet Kayland Bond took third in the 800 and ran on the third place 4×800 relay team with Julia Burek, Allyson Dayton and Madison Lane. Gracie Tyus was fifth in the shot with a personal best.

For the boys varsity, Hunter Board was sixth in the 100 meters and Ryan Moore took sixth in the800 meters.

“We as a team have been progressing nicely and are seeing the results in many personal records being set as well as medals being placed around necks,” said Royal.

The Terriers are scheduled to run in the Knights’ Invitational at Cave Spring High School this Saturday.
