(by Kathryn Sowers) The GFWC Vinton Woman’s Club celebrated Read Aloud Week by reading to students at Herman L. Horn Elementary. Maggie Angell is shown reading to first graders at the school.

The week of October 24 was Read Aloud Week and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) encouraged their members “to support schools where they are and with what they need.”

The Vinton Woman’s Club members observed Read Aloud Week by reading to students at Herman L. Horn Elementary in Vinton.

Maggie Angell read to first graders on two separate days; Brenda Hardy read to fourth graders; and Kathryn Sowers also read to first graders. Sowers said that “the time reading was enjoyed by the children and by club members.”

The GFWC members who participated hope this will become an annual event.

The GFWC Woman’s Club of Vinton is well known locally for its devotion to meeting any needs that arise in the community, big or small.
