The William Byrd softball team will ride a three game winning streak to
Blacksburg tonight for a non-district game with the Bruins. The girls are coming on
strong down the stretch, improving their record to 6-8.
The streak began with an 11-0 shutout win over William Fleming in Roanoke last
Wednesday. Shelby Ensor drove in four runs on two hits and Sara Lang struck out 11
batters to pick up the win. She went all five innings, allowing only two hits.
Byrd had a dozen hits in the win. Mary Wray, Arianna Krista, Ensor, Olivia
Bustamante and Hadyn Grubb each collected two hits and the team also drew five walks.
The bats were smoking again Friday as the Terriers downed Northside, 19-1. Wray had three hits, including a home run to left in the third inning.
Byrd got on the board in the top of the first inning after Grubb doubled to center
field. Northside committed an error and Mallory Peroulas hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring
one run.
Seven more Terriers runs crossed the plate in the second inning to extend the lead
to 10-0. Ryleigh Grubb singled, scoring one run, Hadyn Grubb doubled, scoring two
runs, Addison Clark homered to center field, scoring three runs, and Olivia Bustamante
doubled, scoring one run. Byrd then scored nine more in the third inning for a 19-0 lead
and the rout was on.
Addison Clark stepped in the circle first for Byrd. She surrendered two hits and
zero runs over two and one-third innings, striking out two and walking none. Sara Lang
pitched in relief.

On Monday the girls made it three in a row with a 2-0 win over Cave Spring in
Vinton. Clark pitched a complete game shutout to pick up the win.
Byrd got on the board in the bottom of the second inning after Carson Wood
singled down the right field line and Sydney Tuck doubled to center field, each scoring
one run. Clark did the rest, scattering eighth hits and allowing just one walk while
striking out six.
