BYRD BOYS ARE RUNNERS-UP IN REGION 3D TRACK

The William Byrd boys were second and the girls were fourth at the Region 3D track meet last Saturday morning. Abingdon High swept the boys and girls team titles at the Kerr-Cregger Indoor Fieldhouse at Roanoke College in Salem.

Byrd qualified 10 athletes for the state meet, which will be held at Liberty University on Monday and Tuesday of next week, February 27 and 28. Wyatte Bailey, Walter Barrows, DeShawn Austin, Brady Reachy, Dylan Hughes and Donald Mullins will compete in the boys’ state meet while Olivia Hurd, Olivia Bustamante, Sydney Blewett and Grace Owni will represent the Terriers in the girls’ state meet.

On the boys side of the region competition Bailey started the day by winning the pole vault with a height of 13’, which was a region meet record. In the other field events Austin won the long jump (20’07) and Triple Jump (41’) and took fifth in the high jump (5’6).

In the running events Hughes won the region 55m dash title with a time of 6.71.  Bailey finished fourth in the 300m dash (38.06) and Hughes finished 5th (38.18).  In the 500m dash Bailey was second with a time of 1:10.36 and Mullins finished fourth in the 1,000 meters at 2:44.14. Austin was third in the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.50.

In the relays the 4x200m team of Reachy, Cooper Minnix, Elliot Gaines and Noah Thompson took second in 1:38.18 and the 4x400m team of Bailey, Mullins, Austin and Hughes won the region title with a time of 3:41.55.

On the girls’ side Blewett started the day by winning the shot put competition with a throw of 37’1”, which was a new meet record.  Bustamante finished fourth in the high jump, clearing 4’10”, and Maddie Simmons was sixth in the long jump with a jump of 14’11.5”.

Owni took fourth in the 300m with time of 43.89 seconds and second in the 500m dash in 1:21.98. Emma Gordon was sixth in the 500m with a time of 1:27.00.

Hurd finished fourth in the 1000m in 3:21.20.  The 4x200m relay of Simmons, Emma Matthews, Bustamante and Annika Hylton came in fourth at 1:57.09 and the 4x400m relay of Owni, Hurd, Gordon and Jayden Niday took fourth with a time of 4:28.22.
