Best lax season ends with loss to defending state champions

The William Byrd boys’ lacrosse team saw their most successful season end with
a loss to Salem at Salem High’s Spartan Field last week. The defending state champions
eliminated Byrd from the Region D tournament with a 17-3 win.

The loss ended Byrd’s season at 8-8, but it was not without some highlights and
hopes for continued improvement. The Terriers won a post-season game for the first time
in school history and were a couple goals away from posting a winning season.

“Throughout the year, the Terriers set new standards for the program with their
hard work, dedication, and team-first mentality,” said second year coach Kaden West,
who played for Byrd when he was student. “The season included numerous milestone
victories and the program’s deepest postseason run to date.”

Byrd was one win short of making the Region D championship game and that
would have secured a spot in the state tournament. The Terriers will graduate seniors
Justyn Rozenboom, Kevin Green, Jack Law, Cason Nichols, Ben Waid, Ben Wright,
Morrison Wright and Dawson Young.

“While the season ended sooner than the team had hoped, the accomplishments
and growth shown throughout the year have laid a strong foundation for the future of the
program,” said West. “The players, coaches and supporters have plenty to be proud of as
the Terriers close the chapter on a historic season and look ahead to building on their
success in the years to come.”
