The Virginia High School League Class 3 and 4 track meets will be held at
Liberty University this Friday and Saturday. William Byrd will be well-represented in the
Class 3 meet as they will send a strong delegation to Lynchburg after last Thursday’s
results in the Region 3D meet.
The region meet was held at Christiansburg High School last Thursday, May 29.
The Abingdon boys and girls swept the team championships while William Byrd came in
third place in both.
The Terriers had some great individual performances. Byrd senior DeShawn
Austin won three region championships, winning the 110 high hurdles in 14.49, the 300
meter hurdles in 37 seconds flat and the long jump with a leap of 40’7”. DeShawn also
took third in the 200.

Byrd’s Ethan Haston was second in the long jump and third in the pole vault and
Parker Minnix took fifth in the pole vault. Michael Goins was fourth in the 110 hurdles,
James Smith was sixth in the 100 and the boys 4 x 800 relay team was fourth with Colin
Mills, Gio Pandolfini, Jack Petersen and Colton Sotherden.
In the throwing events Gregory Stiltner qualified for state with a fourth in the
discus and Logan Hodges was sixth. Titus Beatty was sixth in the shot put.
For the girls, Lily Perez won the triple jump with a leap of 34’9.75”. Lily was also
second in the 100 hurdles and second in both the high and long jumps.

Grace Onwi was runnerup in the 400 meter dash while Lucy Whitenack was sixth
in the 1,600. The 4×800 meter relay team of Jadyn St. Clair, Emma Thierry, Whitenack
and Jenna Petersen was second and the 4×400 relay of Emma Matthews, Perez, Onwi and
Michal Hamlar was third. The 4×100 foursome of Matthews, Perez, Thalia Green and
Hamlar also qualified for state with a fifth place finish.
Other field event scorers included a second in the pole vault by Spencer Peters.
Skye Williams was third in the shot put and fourth in the discus and Kaelyn Wheeler took
sixth in the discus.
