The William Byrd girls will host Staunton River on Friday when the Region 3D basketball tournament begins. The game will start at 5:30 pm and is the first game of a doubleheader, with the boys hosting Magna Vista in the nightcap.
The girls come in at 4-19 while Staunton River is 4-20. Staunton River won all three head-to-head meetings with Byrd during the regular season but the Terriers have had some girls return from injuries and are currently the healthiest they’ve been all season and hoping to turn that around Friday.
“The ladies are working hard and are getting ready to compete,” said Byrd coach Randy Bush. “Our region is one of the toughest, if not THE toughest, in the state and we want to compete at our highest ability in our region.
“Their work ethic will get them in a good position for the task ahead. Playoff basketball is the best. The buildup, the survive-and-advance feeling, it is definitely a different feel. I am blessed to be a part of this group of ladies and coaches that want to work hard and succeed.”
Byrd played at Franklin County to open the Blue Ridge District tournament last Friday and dropped a 47-30 decision. Alexis Helton led the Terriers with seven points, Kaylee Makuch had six and Sophia Chrisley and Logan Andrews had five each.
The Blue Ridge District tournament championship game was scheduled for Wednesday night, with Lord Botetourt playing at William Fleming. The next round of the Region 3D tournament will be Tuesday, February 21, and if the Terriers win Friday they’ll be on the road.
