The William Byrd Big Orange wrestlers hosted a quad match on January 10 and
won all three on a night they honored their seniors. Byrd defeated Roanoke Catholic, 73-
6, Glenvar, 42-29, and Patrick Henry, 42-38.
“I was very happy with our performance,” said Byrd coach Thomas Kessler. “We
beat some quality opponents and did what we needed to do, teamwise, to get the win. It’s
a lot of fun when the team has success and not just individual success.”
Seniors on the roster include Gage Cockran, Ruby Gaspar Reyes, Bricen
Lancaster and Brycen Nielsen.
Byrd was originally scheduled to wrestle in the Big Blue tournament at
Christiansburg this weekend, but the Terriers have opted not attend. Instead, they will go
to the Big Red tournament at Riverheads the following weekend. The Blue Ridge District
tournament is scheduled for Northside High on January 31.
“Our team has really progressed during the season and I am happy to see where
we are currently,” said Kessler. “With that being said we still have a long ways to go to
get to our ultimate goal, which is state placers and state champions at the end of the
season. We are about three and a half weeks away from the region tournament and we
will need to start peaking around that time.”
