Fall practices are underway for the William Byrd High School sports teams as opening day approaches for the new semester.
The William Byrd volleyball team has started practice and will have several scrimmages in the coming weeks. The jayvees will participate in the Rockbridge Jamboree on August 11, beginning at 9 am. The jayvee and varsity will have a scrimmage at home against E.C. Glass on Monday, August 13, with the jayvees at 5 pm and the varsity to follow at 6:45 pm. The varsity is entered in the Rockbridge Jamboree on Saturday, August 18, at 9 am, and opening day is Tuesday, August 21, at Hidden Valley.
The William Byrd football team is into its second week of practice as the Terriers prepare for their August 24 opener at Cave Spring.
The Terriers will begin two-a-day practices today and they’ll put on full pads and hit for the first time. They’ll go from 8-10 am in the morning and 4-6 pm in the evening, and that schedule will remain the same through next Thursday, August 9.
Byrd’s first scrimmage will be Friday, August 10, when the Terriers host Franklin County at 6 pm. The Eagles are coached by former Byrd quarterback and assistant coach JR Edwards. Byrd’s second scrimmage will be at Jefferson Forest on August 16.
The Byrd cross country team will have its first scrimmage on Wednesday, August 22, at William Byrd High School. It will be a two-mile relay with Patrick Henry and Cave Spring joining the Terriers. Byrd’s first regular season run is at the Bengal Clash at the River on August 30 at the Smith River Soccer Complex in Martinsville.
