The William Byrd golf team opened the 2018 season at Ole Monterey Tuesday in a Blue Ridge District match hosted by William Fleming. From early returns there’s no doubt who the BRD favorite will be.

Lord Botetourt shot a team score of 314 to win the round by 42 strokes over second place Staunton River. The Cavaliers had the three best scores with Brett Pennington at 77 and teammates Kyle Lograsso and Samir Daridor at 78. Byrd’s best score was an 80 by Bryce Corkery.

The Terriers shot a 367 as a team, which was fourth among the five BRD teams. After LB’s 314 it was Staunton River at 356, William Fleming at 357, Byrd at 367 and Northside at 408.

Also scoring for the Terriers were Gavin Mullen with a 91, Griffen Horacek at 97 and Mason Stanley at 98. Kendrick South and TJ Gamble also played for Byrd and both carded a 101.

The Terriers are back on the links today as they play at Hanging Rock in a district “mini match” hosted by Northside. Tee time is 1 pm.

Byrd is entered in the annual Bob McLelland Metro Tournament next week, covering 36 holes at two courses. The first round is at Blue Hills on Wednesday, August 8, and the final round is at the Botetourt Golf & Swim Club on Thursday, August 9. Golfing will begin at 12:30 pm at Blue Hills and noon at the BG&SG.
