William Byrd High School senior Israel Hairston has been named Class 3 VHSL Foundation
Achievement Award Scholar Athlete of the Year. He will be recognized at a luncheon at the
Omni Charlottesville Hotel on May 20.
Hairston will receive a $2,000 scholarship that will go directly to the college or university he has
chosen—Virginia Tech. He will also receive a sterling silver Queen Anne Revere Bowl. The
school will receive a Queen Anne Revere Bowl to display in the trophy case.
According to VHSL Communications Director Mike McCall, Hairston “is one of 19 exceptional
Virginia High School scholar athletes and scholar academic activity participants to be awarded
the prestigious 2024 VHSL Foundation Achievement Award scholarships for an exemplary high
school career.”
The scholarship, “as the Class 3 Male Scholar Athlete of the Year, is a testament to your hard
work, dedication, and outstanding achievements.”
Hairston will be accompanied to the luncheon by his parents, other family members, and his
football coach at WBHS, Brad Lutz, who will introduce Hairston.
