William Byrd High School has announced its Terriers of the Month for November, both students
and faculty. All WBHS students and staff may nominate individuals who they believe exhibit the
“Terrier Way” (being safe, respectful, responsible, and embodying the best of WBHS). Teachers
and staff nominate students for the honor; students nominate faculty and staff members. All
receive postcards from the person who nominated them explaining why they were honored.
Students chosen as Terriers of the Month for November are Annabelle Teague, Ceiliann
Baldwin, Jakeem Toler, Jamari Toler, Jacob Perez, Hendrix Wright, and Alana Niday.

Annabelle Teague was recognized as “an outstanding student who comes to class prepared,
engaged, and ready to learn every day. She consistently goes above and beyond, completing
optional extension work and staying focused on every task. She is always willing to help whether
it’s assisting a classmate or supporting her teacher. She does so with patience and genuine
kindness. Her thoughtful and compassionate nature makes her classroom a better place.
Annabelle is truly a joy to teach and an exceptional Terrier.”
Ceiliann Baldwin was recognized as “a thoughtful dedicated student who elevates every class
discussion he participates in. He brings a strong sense of focus and a deep understanding of the
issues to be explored. What sets him apart is his ability to challenge ideas respectfully and
thoughtfully, encouraging his classmates to think more critically without creating conflict. His
maturity and insight enrich every conversation. We are lucky to have him as part of our Terrier
community.”
Jakeem Toler was recognized “for his excellent leadership, responsibility and being willing to
pitch in and help without being asked. He demonstrates Terrier Pride.”
Jamari Toler was recognized “for his dependability and strong work ethic.”
Jacob Perez was recognized “for his helpful attitude and teamwork and making a great
difference.”
Hendrix Wright was recognized for “his positive attitude and willingness to help, reflecting the
spirit of a true Terrier.”
Alana Niday was recognized as a Terrier of the Month “for bringing positivity and enthusiasm to
class every day. She shows kindness and compassion to everyone around her and consistently produces excellent work. Her bright attitude and dedication make her a wonderful representative
of Terrier values.”
Faculty members honored in November are Eric Royal and Dan Plybon.

“Mr. Plybon always strives to make band fun and enjoyable for everyone. He brings a positive
attitude to class and treats all students with respect, creating a welcoming and uplifting
environment.”
“Mr. Royal is appreciated for being someone students feel safe and comfortable talking to. He is
always willing to pause what he’s doing to help others, treating everyone with respect. Students
describe him as supportive, dependable, and an all-around outstanding teacher.”
Two years ago, ALCOVA Mortgage in Vinton and its branch manager Matt Crizer (a WBHS
graduate) reached out to Byrd, looking for a way “to honor students and teachers who are doing
great things in and out of the classroom.” They made the decision to expand upon the Terrier of
the Month program which already existed, adding t-shirts for the students chosen, the postcards,
and media recognition.
The T-shirts are designed each year through a competition in the graphic design classes of art
instructor, Alicia Spangler.
The program is facilitated by Asst. Principal Kevin Richardson and Life Counselor Lauren
Pomeroy. They and Crizer believe the Terrier of the Month program is having a significant
impact on the school.
