William Byrd High School has recognized its Terriers of the Month for November. Four students
and two teachers were selected, nominated by students and staff. The school is partnering with
Alcova Mortgage this year to recognize students and staff who “are doing great things in and out
of the classroom.”
All WBHS students and staff are encouraged to nominate individuals who they believe exhibit
the “Terrier Way” (being safe, respectful, and responsible and embodying the best of WBHS).
Each Terrier of the Month receives a T-shirt from Alcova Mortgage, designed by the Graphic
Design classes at the high school.
Student Terriers of the Month for November are:
Landon Dyess is a senior and member of the Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Team who
was nominated for his outgoing personality, academic achievement, and infectious school spirit.
The staff member who nominated Landon said, “Landon bleeds Orange and Maroon. He attends
nearly every school event and is the most enthusiastic and supportive Terrier I’ve ever seen. He’s
a great representation of what makes WBHS so special.” Landon’s parents are Sarah and Danny
Dyess.
Mary Wray is a junior and member of Terrier TV who was nominated for her positivity and
willingness to help support and mentor others. The staff member who nominated Mary said,
“She is always willing to help in any way that she can…[and] she is there to offer her help with a
smile. Other club members look to her for guidance as they plan their next segment idea.”
Mary’s parents are David and Heather Wray.
Jayden Niday is a sophomore and member of the Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Team
who was nominated for her work ethic and positivity. The teacher who nominated Jayden said, “she’s a great student with a great attitude. She works hard, always has a smile on her face, and
is a perfect role model for all student athletes.” Jayden’s parents are Evan and Melanie Niday.
Madelyn Brown is a freshman and the winning designer of this year’s Terriers of the Month T-
Shirt Contest. Madelyn was nominated for her kindness, perseverance, and commitment to
excellence. The teacher who nominated Madelyn said, “Maddy is a talented graphic design
student who chooses difficult designs instead of the easiest option—because of this, she has
faced frustrating challenges and handled them with grace.” Madelyn Brown’s parent is Amanda
Harrison.
Teachers chosen as Terrier of the Month for November are:
Denise Sartell teaches Art I, III, and IV, as well as Digital Photography. The students who
nominated her highlighted her thoughtful and kind disposition. As one student said, “She’s
friendly, kind, and calls everyone friend…you would want her as a teacher.” Or as another
student said, “She is a caring and thoughtful teacher…she makes art fun for everyone of all
levels.”
Ryan Adams teaches Advanced Biology and College Bound Chemistry. The students who
nominated him highlighted his ability to make class and learning fun. One student said, “Mr.
Adams is such an amazing guy and so much fun. He makes learning always fun and if you’re
stressed or need help, he will always help you out.” Or as another student said simply said, “He’s
a fun teacher who loves seeing his students do well.”
