The GFWC Woman’s Club of Vinton held their annual installation of officers and presentation
of scholarships banquet at the Olive Garden on May 27. It was also a celebration of their 70th
anniversary.

New and returning officers include Co-Presidents Kathryn Sowers and Lois Creasy, 1st Vice
President Hazel Moody, 2nd Vice President Jane Banton, Secretary Mary Kay Brown, and
Treasurer Judy Banik. They were installed by Teresa Craig, a member of the GFWC Bedford

William Byrd High School senior Kaylee Makuch was recognized for being awarded the Vinton
Woman’s Club Scholarship, which was previously presented at the WBHS Senior Awards
banquet in April. She will be attending Virginia Tech in the fall. She was accompanied by her
mother, Jamie Hawse.

Club Scholarship. Pictured left to right are Lois Creasy, Kaylee Makuch, her mother Jamie

WBHS senior Sara Lang was recognized for winning the GFWC Virginia Phyllis V. Roberts
Scholarship – one of only three winners throughout the entire state of Virginia. She will be
enrolling in Bluefield University this fall as a student athlete playing softball. She was
accompanied to the banquet by her mother, Lisa Lang.

Sara Lang received the GFWC Virginia Phyllis V. Roberts Scholarship for $1,000. She is the
first recipient of this award from Vinton. The scholarship is named for Phyllis V. Roberts, the
second Virginian to serve as GFWC International President (1986-1988). Applicants for this
scholarship must be Virginia residents and have a cumulative 3.0 GPA. The scholarship goes
directly to the college where the student is enrolling.

In addition to an award for their 70 years of service to the community from the GFWC and
GFWC Virginia, the Vinton Woman’s Club also received second place in the state for their club
newsletter. Member Camilla Cabaniss, along with her husband Johnsey Cabaniss, are the editors.
