The Vinton Area Swim Team completed a successful season on July 21, winning the 2018 Roanoke Valley Aquatic Association Division 4 Championship at the City-County meet in Christiansburg.
Vinton scored a total of 4,204 points in the combined regular season and City-County standings. This was a huge accomplishment for a team of only 25 swimmers.
Top scorers at City County were Austin Nielsen with 297 points, Ben Hoyos with 295, Madelynn Sprouse with 291.5, Glenn Buyalos with 290, Michael Hoyos with 261, Meg Miller with 259, Hannah Grove with 249, and Analise Buyalos with 226.
Aiden Beasley won two bronze medals with a second place in the 25 back and a third place in the 25 free. Analise Buyalos won a gold medal with a third place finish in the 25 free. Her mother, Amanda Buyalos won a first silver medal in the 50 breast, a second silver in the 100 free, and a third silver in the 50 free.
Glenn Buyalos won three gold medals, finishing second in the 50 back, second in the 100 IM, and second in the 50 breast. Whitney Davis earned a second silver medal in the 50 free. Hannah Grove won a first silver in the 50 back. Stella Jones won a second bronze in the 100 IM. Meg Miller won a first silver in the 50 fly. Gretchen Moomey won a third bronze in the 100 free. Tyler Troutt won a second place silver medal in the 50 free.
Three swimmers won five gold medals: Austin Nielsen, Ben Hoyos, and Madelynn Sprouse. Austin won the 50 back, 100 IM, and 50 breast and finished second in the 50 free and third in the 100 free. Ben Hoyos won second in 25 back, 25 free, 100 IM, 25 fly, and 50 free. Madelynn Sprouse won the 50 breast, and finished third in the 50 back, 100 IM, 100 free, and 50 free.
Every single swimmer on the team scored at City County. The team will now transition to the year round program. The Star City Aquatic Team swims at Lancerlot six days a week. Anyone interested in joining the team can do so by contacting the Lancerlot at 540-981-0205.
