The William Byrd volleyball team beat two lue Ridge District opponents in the past week to improve to 3-2 at the halfway point of their district schedule. The Terriers will try to keep the momentum going tonight when they travel to William Fleming to open the second half of the their BRD season.
“I am very proud of these young ladies,” said Byrd coach Allison Thornton.
“They continue to improve in communication and work ethic. It’s exciting to see it all
come together.”
Last Thursday in Moneta the girls played Staunton River and defeated the host
Eagles in three sets, 25-17, 25-12 and 25-12. Maggie Zimmerman had 17 assists and four
aces for Byrd while Ava Ashworth contributed three aces and 11 digs. The jayvees also
won, 25-18, 25-10.
On Tuesday at home the Terriers hosted Northside and beat the Vikings in three,
25-10, 25-23 and 25-19. Bella Dudley had a big night with 11 kills and a block. Kaylee
Makuch had 16 assists and seven digs and Maggie Pittman put down four kills. The
jayvee won again, 25-13 and 25-11.
Tuesday was also “Tiny Terrier Night” in Vinton as local campers from the
summer came to support the team and were recognized as the “future of our program.”
“Our Tiny Terrier camp was for all rising 3rd-6th graders and worked on
fundamental skills of volleyball with our JV and Varsity players,” said Thornton. “We
had so much fun and loved seeing our campers in the stands.”
The Terriers are now 6-9 overall. Next Tuesday they’ll be back home to host
undefeated Lord Botetourt, and a week from today the girls go to Franklin County.
