It was a big time on the oval last week as William Fleming played host to
the annual Cosmopolitan Club track meet.
The “Cosmo” had divisions for middle schoolers, Juniors (9th and 10th
grade) and Seniors (11th and 12th ) and was held over three days in Roanoke. The
Pulaski boys and Roanoke Catholic girls won Senior Division titles, the Northside
boys and Blacksburg girls took the Junior Division and the Andrew Lewis boys
and Blacksburg girls won Middle School titles.
In the girls’ meet William Byrd was second in the Senior Division, eighth
in the Junior Division and fourth in the Middle School Division.
Senior Divison winners for Byrd included Emma Kageals in the 100m
hurdles with a time of 16.06, taking the Richard Pitts Award. Sydney Blewett
finished first in the shot put at 36’2.25”.
Lily Perez finished second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.06, second
in the long jump (16’3.75) and second in the triple jump (35’7.5). Lily also ran on
the second place 4×100 relay team with Olaedo Anyanwu, Alexia Donahue and
Jaleiya Bannister, finishing with a time of 55.03.
Grace Onwi finished third in the Senior 100m dash with a time of 13.02
and second in the 400m dash at 59.42. Olivia Bustamante was second in the high
jump competition, clearing 4’10”, and Alexia Donahue finished sixth in the 200m
dash with a time of 29.53.
In the Junior Division Heidi Weinke finished sixth in the 300m hurdles
event with a time of 58.96.
The William Byrd boys finished sixth in the Senior Division, eighth in the
Junior Division and the middle schoolers were fourth.
In the Senior Division DeShawn Austin won the 300m hurdles race with a
time of 40.31, taking home the Sherwood Kasey Award. DeShawn was fifth in the
200 meters at 23.74.
Wyatte Bailey won the pole vault, clearing 11’6”, while Israel Hairston
was third in the high jump at 5’8”.
Donald Mullins took fourth in the mile in 4:39.41 and sixth in the 800 at
2:06.73. Jamez Tler was sixth in the 100 at 11.72 and Brady Reachy was eighth in
11.87.
In the Junior Division Micheal Goins won the 110m hurdles with a state
qualifying time of 16.01.
Thursday the Terriers hosted multiple teams at William
Byrd High School. Byrd took teams to Christiansburg and EC Glass on
Saturday.
