The William Byrd tennis teams swept Blue Ridge District rival Franklin
County on Tuesday, with the boys winning at home and the girls shutting out the
Eagles, 9-0, in Rocky Mount.
Byrd’s boys won 7-0, as two singles matches did not finish due to rain.
Singles winners were Ryan Carista at one, 8-4, Dillon Colgan at three, 8-2, Luke
Hemming at five, 8-0, and Cody Gardner at six, 8-2. Doubles winners were
Carista and Maddox Wolfe at one, 8-1, Keith Schult, Jr. and Ryan McIntyre at
two, 8-4, and Hemming and Gardner at three, 8-1.
The Terriers played Lord Botetourt last Friday and split, with the boys
winning 7-2 at Hollins University and the girls falling 7-2 in Vinton. Makenna
Jacobsen and Ashley Begasse won at one and two singles for the girls.
The boys got singles wins from Wolfe, Colgan, Schult and Hemming
while McIntyre and Schult won in doubles. Botetourt forfeited two matches.
The boys remained undefeated at 8-0 in the Blue Ridge District and 8-6
overall while the girls are 4-4 and 7-7. The boys are at Staunton River Friday and
home to Northside next Tuesday while the girls play the same two at opposite
sites.
