Tennis teams pick up wins

The William Byrd tennis teams picked up some wins the past week as both the girls and boys look forward to the post-season.

The girls have been on a roll. Last week the hosted William Fleming and took a 9-0 win, then did the same at Staunton River on Friday. On Tuesday Byrd hosted Lord Botetourt for “Senior Night” and took an 8-1 win.

“We congratulated all five seniors on their accomplishments throughout the season and their four years of high school,” said coach Kayla Mitchell. “ Kaidyn Settles (#1 & # 1 doubles) is set to go to Liberty University next school year. Hannah Shelton (#2 & #1 Doubles) is attending Christopher Newport. Allison Faulkner (#3) is attending Virginia Western. Julia Kelly (#5 & #2 Doubles) is attending Mary Baldwin. Maddie Craig (#2 Doubles) is attending Virginia Tech and all five seniors had a great night!”

Other winners included number six Maddie Glover, and the third doubles team of Glover and Olivia Ashworth. With the win the Terriers improved to 8-5 and they remained undefeated in the district with a match against Northside at Walrond Park tonight.

The boys also picked up a couple wins. Against Fleming they took a 5-4 win as Adi Iyer, Logan Bond and Colin Honaker won in singles and Byrd took one and three doubles to clinch the win.

On Friday in Vinton the Terriers beat Staunton River, 6-3. Number one Robbie Faust won at singles along with Iyer, Meet Patel, Honaker and Taylor Crouch.

On Tuesday at Hollins University Byrd fell to district unbeaten Lord Botetourt, 9-0. Byrd is now 5-10 overall and 4-3 in the district. The Terriers will host Northside today in their final regular season match.
