Virginia High School League spring sports will officially begin on Monday, March 12, and William Byrd has a full slate of action to open the season.

On Monday the Byrd tennis teams will take the court. The girls will host Glenvar in Vinton while the boys will play at Glenvar.

On Tuesday the Terriers will play Roanoke County rival Cave Spring in six different sports, with 10 games actually scheduled if you count the junior varsity.  The baseball season opens with a home game against Cave Spring, beginning at 5 pm at Walthall Park, while the jayvees are at Cave Spring. In softball, the Byrd girls are on the road and the jayvees are home, also at 5 pm.

Both soccer teams will also debut against Cave Spring on Tuesday. The boys will host a jayvee-varsity doubleheader on the new turf field at Patterson Stadium, beginning with a 5:30 pm jayvee game and the varsity to follow. The girls are at Cave Spring at the same times.

The tennis teams play for the second day in a row Tuesday, this time against Cave Spring. This time the boys are home and the girls are on the road, at Cave Spring.

The Byrd lacrosse teams will open on Wednesday, March 14, and both will be at home. The girls will host Blacksburg on the Patterson turf at 5:30 pm, followed by the boys’ season opener against the Bruins.

This week spring teams wrap up their scrimmages, including a boys’ soccer jamboree scheduled for Patterson Stadium Saturday afternoon. Liberty, Staunton River, James River and Glenvar will join the Terriers for 35 minute scrimmages. Byrd will scrimmage Liberty at 1:30 pm and Glenvar at 2:50 pm. Jayvee scrimmages will also be at Byrd Saturday on the practice field, with the jayvee Terriers kicking off at 2:05 pm, 2:40 pm and 4:25 pm.

The Byrd lacrosse teams will host a jamboree at Patterson Stadium Saturday morning. The boys will scrimmage Cave Spring at 9 am and Hidden Valley at 10:30 am, with a CS-HV scrimmage inbetween. The girls will scrimmage Cave Spring at 11:15 amd and Hidden Valley at 12:45 pm, again with the Knights and Titans inbetween.

The baseball team was scheduled to have its final scrimmage on Wednesday, and the softball team will host Patrick Henry this Friday for a scrimmage. The Byrd girls were scheduled to participate in the Auburn Jamboree but pulled out since several of the girls are also on the basketball team, and they didn’t finish their season until last Friday.
