The William Byrd softball girls recently completed their best season ever and that’s reflected in the Virginia High School League Class 4 All-State team, which was released in the past week. Byrd had six girls on the team, two on the first team and four on the second team.
Senior pitcher Mara Strum and junior outfielder Sydney Burton were both named first team All-State from Byrd. Three seniors were named to the second team, Katie Fuchs at second, Alexis West in the outfield and Ellassen Spangler at “DP-Flex,” and junior Jada Karnes is second team All-State at first base. Six is the most players the Terriers have ever had on the All-State team.
Byrd finished the season with a 23-2 record and made it to the state semifinal, where the Terriers lost a 1-0 game to eventual state champion Woodgrove. Wolverines pitcher Camryn Dolby threw a no-hitter in that game, and she was named the Player of the Year in Class 4.
