Peters runs for re-election to Board of Supervisors, faces treatments for thyroid cancer

Jason Peters, who serves as Vinton’s representative on the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors, has announced that he is running for re-election.

Jason Peters seeks the support of the community as he runs for re-election to the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors in the June 13 Republican Primary against Harry Griego. He covets the prayers of the community as he undergoes treatment at Johns Hopkins Medical Center for recently diagnosed thyroid cancer.

Peters began serving on the board in January 2014; fellow board members chose him as vice chairman that first year. He was elected chairman of the board in 2015 and 2016.

Peters believes he can run on his substantial record of accomplishments in economic development in his first term on the board, which include completion of the Vinton Public Library begun under former supervisor Mike Altizer; further partnerships between Roanoke County and Vinton in renovations to the former Roland E. Cook Elementary School and former William Byrd High School, transforming them into upscale apartments; as well as the sale and re-development of the old library into a Macado’s restaurant.

His county-wide efforts include economic development projects involving leading and adopting a master plan for Explore Park and the first ever Community Strategic Plan for Roanoke County. He pursued the construction of the Chick-fil-A Restaurant now operating in Bonsack and helped to launch the Reimagine 419 project, encouraging the future re-development of Tanglewood Mall and its sale to Blackwater Resources.

Peters says he made it a priority to strengthen regional relationships with expansion of the broadband network with 25 miles of open-access fiber to primary commercial corridors, and regional investment with the purchase of 106 acres of Woodhaven Road properties along Interstates 81 and 581 through the Western Virginia Industrial Facilities Authority.

Peters is a Vinton native who began serving the community as a volunteer with the Vinton First Aid Crew when he was still in high school at William Byrd and where he continues to serve. He works with the Vinton Needy Family program as well.

He served on the Roanoke County Planning Commission before becoming a supervisor. He also served as co-chair of the Capital Campaign Committee for the Vinton-Roanoke County Veterans “High Ground” Monument at the Vinton War Memorial.

Peters is employed by First Citizens Bank in Vinton as a banking officer.

The schedule for his treatments has not been determined, but he and wife Candye have been rigorously campaigning against Griego, who has run in recent campaigns against Bob Goodlatte for the House of Representatives and against Chris Head for the Virginia House of Delegates.

“It has been an honor to serve the Vinton District these last few years and I plan to serve another four years if the voters decide that I am worthy to do so,” said Peters. “I have been out speaking to voters while door-knocking and at events and I will continue to do that until surgery is required. Candye and I appreciate the prayers, support, and love this community has already shown us. Thank you.

“During my time on the Roanoke County board, I have worked with other members to lower the county debt without cutting into vital services,” noted Peters. “I am proud of the work we have done and I ask for your vote on June 13 to re-elect me as your Vinton District Supervisor.”

The Tuesday, June 13 primary is a dual primary where voters may only vote for a Republican or a Democrat– not both. The primary is held at regular polling sites; in the Vinton Magisterial District, that is at the North Vinton, South Vinton, Lindenwood, and Mount Pleasant sites.
