LOA Senior Services Director Shannon Abell was the guest speaker for the Mount Pleasant Lions Club on May 1.

Always a welcome guest, Shannon Abell was the speaker at the Mount Pleasant Lions Club on Tuesday, May 1. Abell is the Director of Senior Services at the LOA (Local Office on Aging).

He talked about changes to Medicare and shared information on how LOA can provide information for the selection of Medicare D plans.  Plan selection can be made between October 15 and December 7.

Abell reminded the group that new Medicare cards are being mailed beginning in May and advised that everyone present the new card to their providers at their next visit.  Shannon talked about various scams and how con artists have already started using the “new card” scam.  Everyone was advised to hang up on any threatening callers.

The LOA office will soon be moving from downtown Roanoke to a new location at 4932 Frontage Road NW, just off Peters Creek Road.

The LOA holds an annual event to benefit Meals on Wheels; called “Let’s Do Lunch” This year it will be held on June 15 at North Roanoke Baptist Church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The $15 cost pays for your lunch plus lunch for two seniors in need. “Meals on Wheels” is just one of the many services that LOA provides in their effort to “help older persons remain independent for as long as possible.”
