William Byrd Middle School volleyball team finishes undefeated

The William Byrd Middle School volleyball team recently finished their season with an undefeated record.

“Wow, an undefeated season during the COVID Pandemic is impressive,” said Byrd coach Jordan Persinger. “The girls overcame several challenges aside from their competition. Between out of season practice being limited, mask protocol, not team practice before first match and several girls participating on travel teams, I could not have asked for a more dedicated and determined group of girls.”

Byrd opened with a win over Cave Spring, and the Terriers were able to hold off a strong Glenvar team. The final nail was driven in last Tuesday as the Terriers beat Northside to complete their undefeated season.

“I could not have asked for a more dedicated and determined group of girls, I was significantly blessed with such a talented group,” said Persinger. “I am sad to lose this group of girls as 16 of the 18 are eighth graders and will be trying out for the high school team in just four short months. I know this group of girls will accomplish so much of the next few years and this will not be the last you hear about their success on the court.”

The Byrd middle school girls are ready to receive a serve.

Team captains were Annika Hylton, Payton Hall and Kaylee Makuch.

“It feels great,” said Hylton of the undefeated season. “I think everyone worked really hard this season and improved a lot. I can’t wait to see what we do in high school.”
