The William Byrd lacrosse teams will begin region play in the coming days, with the girls opening Friday against E.C. Glass in Lynchburg and the boys opening Monday in Salem. Region semifinals are May 24 and championship games are May 26.
Both teams ended regular season action on Monday of this week against Franklin County. The boys ended their regular season with a 9-7 win on a rainy day in Rocky Mount to finish the regular season at 5-9.
Beau Brady led Byrd with three goals and an assist. Dawson Brinkley and Ben Waid had two goals each and scoring once each were Jonathan Farmer, Dom Dulak and Landon French.
“Tough conditions on a wet, rainy Monday evening,” said coach Will Satterfield. “We dug ourselves in a hole early in the game. Our guys fought to get back in the game. Julian Pantoja came up big in the second half in the goal and Jay Rozenboom really helped us at the faceoff x. Our young team grew a lot this year during the regular season and this win should give us momentum going into the playoffs.”
The girls also beat Franklin County, taking a 9-8 win in Vinton. Sam Martin had three goals and two assists, Annika Hilton had three goals and one assist and Olivia Hurd had two goals. Barb Hernandez made 12 saves as the Terriers won for the third time against 11 losses.
