The final lacrosse games on the grass at William Byrd’s Patterson Stadium were played Monday night as the Terriers celebrated “Senior Night.” The girls took an exciting win and the boys concluded a night with a loss to Cave Spring.

The girls win came in sudden death overtime, 7-6 over visiting Cave Spring.  William Byrd led at the half 3-1, and had possession for the majority of the half, holding Cave Spring to seven shots on goal.

In the second half Cave Spring came back with multiple goals but Byrd was able to maintain the lead up to the last three minutes, when a couple of turnovers led to Cave Spring goals which tied the game at 6-6 The game then went into sudden death overtime, and Byrd won the first draw. A quick inside feed by Ali Shail found Tabitha Beecher, who scored the winning goal.

“It was, without a doubt, the most exciting game I have ever coached,” said Byrd coach Dan Eberhardt. “I am so happy that the girls were able to avenge the opening season lost to Cave Spring.”

Leading the offense was Beecher with three goals, Chloe Pascoe with two and senior captain Shail with a goal and game winning assist. Goalie Evamarie Pascoe recorded 10 saves.

The boys followed with a 21-3 loss to the Knights.

“We’re just a young and rebuilding team trying to find their way,” said coach Noel Spencer.

The games were the last on the grass turf, as Roanoke County will soon begin construction on a new artificial turf surface for the Patterson Stadium field.

Byrd also played at Jeffereson Forest last week, where the host Cavaliers proved to be too strong. The JF girls took a 15-2 win and the Cavalier boys shut out Byrd, 17-0.

The boys were scheduled to play Roanoke Catholic at Vinyard Park on Wednesday. Both teams are off next week for spring break.
