The William Byrd girls will have their work cut out for them when they take on William Fleming in basketball Friday night. The varsity game will start at 5:30 pm and is the first game of a doubleheader with the boys.
Fleming comes in with a 9-4 overall record and the Colonels are undefeated in the Blue Ridge District. Last Friday at home they defeated Lord Botetourt, 50-44, in a showdown between the only two teams who had not lost a BRD district game.
Byrd, meanwhile, is still looking for a district win. The Terriers fell to 0-4 in the Blue Ridge and 1-13 overall with a 66-25 loss to Northside in Vinton Tuesday. Sophia Chrisley led the Terriers with 17 points, Sam Martin had four and Kaylee Makuch had three.
Last Friday the girls were in Rocky Mount to play Franklin County, who had lost just one district game to that point. The Eagles jumped on top early and took a 56-20 win over the visiting Terriers. Chrisley had nine points to lead Byrd while Logan Andrews have five and Makuch and Martin had two each.
Byrd coach Randy Bush is hoping to have a healthy lineup by the post-season. The Terriers have struggled with injuries, running out seven different starting lineups in 14 games.
“Even though we are struggling staying healthy the girls are playing hard,” said Bush. “We need to continue to have the next girl up mentality.”
Next up this week was a home game against Bassett on Wednesday, but results were too late for publication. As mentioned Fleming is here Friday and next week the Terriers are at Lord Botetourt Tuesday and at Hidden Valley on Wednesday, January 25.
