According to the Mount Pleasant Elementary School Facebook page, “We live in a fantastic
community! The amount of care for our school and students is never in question. One of our
former students, Ava Sexton, did a community service project and collected over 1,100 snacks
for the students at Mount Pleasant Elementary. The students are so excited!”

Mount Pleasant Principal Jill Lane says, “Her mother had reached out and asked what we might
need for the school. I suggested individual snacks so that we can help students who didn't have
one for the day. We also sometimes use them for students afterschool.”
Sexton said she chose this particular project, “because I was a former student at Mount Pleasant
Elementary and wanted to do something to make a difference in my neighborhood and former
school. I have volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, Feeding America, and other organizations
in the past but wanted to do something different–something that I could be in charge of and
organize myself. While the project does help my Profile of a Graduate, it was not my only reason
for doing it. I just really enjoy doing volunteer work and helping others. I currently have 57
volunteer hours and hope to complete more before graduating.”
Ava is currently a senior at William Byrd High School, captain of the varsity lacrosse team, a
member of the Leo Club, and Senior SCA representative. She was a member of this year’s
Homecoming Court. She is the daughter of Erik and Stacey Sexton.
