William Byrd athletic director Jason Taylor congratulates Khalil Fonder on his district “Swimmer of the Year” award.

The Salem YMCA was the site of the Blue Ridge District swim meet last week and William Byrd had some outstanding performances. The Terriers were team runners-up among both the men and women.

Lord Botetourt swept the team titles for the first time ever. The LB men scored 170 points to 72 for Byrd. Staunton River was third with 60, Northside had 58 and William Fleming had 13.

Byrd senior Khalil Fonder won both the 200 Free and 100 Free. Fonder was named the BRD Men’s Swimmer of the Year. The Arizona State bound swimmer beat the field in the 200 Free by almost 25 seconds.

“You know you’re witnessing something special every time he steps up on the block,” said Byrd coach Krista Martin.

In the women’s competition Botetourt scored 206 points to 116 for the Terriers. Northside was third with 65.5 and Staunton River had 35.5.

Byrd had two district champions, as Laura Schneider won the 50 Free and Abbey Murtaugh won the 100 Fly.

“We had a great meet,” said Martin. “Championship season is my favorite time of the year. These athletes have trained hard all season and now it’s time to put them up against some good competition and let them race.”

The Region D meet will be next on Tuesday, February 6, at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center, beginning at 10 am.
