The William Byrd girls will try to knock Hidden Valley from the ranks of
the unbeaten when the Terriers travel to south county tonight. The 2023 Class 3
state champion Titans have started the season at 9-0.
Byrd hosted Hidden Valley on September 3rd and lost in four sets, but the
Terriers are hoping to turn that around tonight. They were able to do that to Cave
Spring last week, as Byrd avenged a season opening loss at Cave Spring with a
four set win over the Knights in Vinton.
“Big win to revenge the loss at the beginning of the season,” said coach
Allison Thornton.
Byrd won the first set against Cave Spring, 25-16. They fell behind 7-1 to
start the second set but battled back, only to lose it 27-25. Then the Terriers
turned it on with a 25-14 win in the third set and a 25-7 win in the fourth to close
it out.
“The ladies turned up the energy and picked up the third and fourth set,”
said Thornton.
Graysen Divers and Heidi Dixon had nine kills each to lead the Byrd girls
while Divers also had four blocks and Heidi had five aces. Ava Ashworth had 17
digs and three aces.
The girls are now 2-4 on the season but they’ve played a tough schedule
with matches against unbeaten Hidden Valley and Salem, 6-2 Magna Vista and 4-
1 Glenvar. The Terriers are the only team to beat Glenvar thus far, and next
Monday they’ll have a rematch with the Highlanders in Vinton.
