William Byrd’s Briona Hurt works in the low post against Christiansburg. Hurt led her team with 16 points, including the end of regulation time game-tying basket in the 4th quarter in the Terriers’ overtime win.
William Byrd’s Hanna Sowers scores a fast break layup in front of Christiansburg’s Hannah Allen during the first half. Sowers scored the game winning basket and had 14 points in Byrd’s come from behind overtime win.

The William Byrd girls basketball team improved to 10-0 as they opened the new year with a win at Bassett Tuesday. Byrd also took a close win over Christiansburg last week, and the Terriers were scheduled to host the Blue Demons on Wednesday of this week.

All eyes were on Vinton Wednesday as the Byrd girls took on Christiansburg. Results were too late for publication, but it was expected to be a thriller after Byrd took a 65-63 over the Demons in Christiansburg last Friday.

“That was one of the top two craziest finishes for a win that I’ve been a part of,” said Byrd coach Brad Greenway. “We were down the entire game but things fell into place and our girls just made enough plays to keep it going when they had to.”

Byrd trailed by 10 after three quarters and the Terriers were down five points with 14 seconds left in regulation. Byrd tied it on three free throws by Hannah Sowers with five seconds left and a bucket by Briona Hurt with three seconds on the clock send it into overtime.

In the extra period the game was tied at 63-63 when Megan Grant missed shot was rebounded by Sowers, who scored on a put-back with three seconds left to win the game.

“It doesn’t make sense that we were able to get out with a win,” said Greenway. “We shot our lowest percentage of the season and turned the ball over at really bad times against the best team we’ve played so far. Christiansburg outrebounded us by 12 in the second half which made it even tougher to get over the hump, but you know sometimes you’re better off being lucky than good.”

Sowers finished with 14 points, four assists and three blocks. Hurt had 16 points and 13 boards and Grant had 14 points and seven rebounds. Jacy Marvin had 11 points and seven rebounds and Sydney Burton added 10 points.

On Tuesday in Bassett the girls jumped on the Bengals early and took a 54-28 win. Byrd led 26-11 by the half and won every quarter. Burton had 16 points and Grant had 11. Everyone on the team got in the game for Byrd.

The Terriers are back on the road Friday at Glenvar, and next Tuesday they host William Fleming.
