The William Byrd boys won the Blue Ridge District swim championship
and the girls finished second at the Gator Center in Roanoke last Friday. The
Terriers also took home some impressive individual honors at the meet.
Byrd’s Lindsay Murtaugh was one of three girls who were named the Blue
Ridge District Swimmer of the Year, joining Layne Jones and Hannah Mizuba of
Lord Botetourt. Lindsay was undefeated individually, winning the 200 and 500
freestyle events at the BRD meet.
“Lindsay puts in countless hours of training in the pool,” said Byrd coach
Krista Martin. “I love seeing her hard work pay off.”
The boys won the team title with 85 points and Terrier coach Martin was
named the district boys’ Coach of the Year. Franklin County was second with 61 points, followed by Staunton River with 38, Lord Botetourt with 24, Northside
with seven and William Fleming scored two points.
Byrd’s 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams both took home first place
medals. Both teams consisted of Cole Kovacevic, Michael Hoyos, Blake
Richardson and Evan Copening.
Individually, Kovacevic won the 100 free, Hoyos won the 200 free and
Brody Parrish won the 500 free.
Lord Botetourt won the girls championship with 96 points with the
Terriers taking second with 66. Franklin County had 33 points and Staunton River
had 21.
In addition to Murtaugh’s two individual firsts Lindsay also anchored the
winning 200 free relay with Addison Collins, Gabby Romeo and Cary Jones.
Jones also won the 100 breaststroke
“What a night!” said Martin. “I hope the swimmers made some good
memories at the Blue Ridge District Meet this year. Coach James (Martin) and I
are so proud of them.”
Byrd will now travel to the Christiansburg Aquatic Center next Tuesday,
February 6th , for the Region 3D meet.
