Friday night’s football game between William Byrd High School and Hidden Valley was action-
packed, with the Terriers defeating the Knights 65-3. It was also a special night for another
reason—it was the annual “Rec Night”, recognizing and celebrating children and youth—and
their coaches–who participate in Vinton Recreation League sports—soccer, cheer, flag football,
and tackle football.
Participants parade on the track in front of the grandstands, waving to their families and the
crowd as their names are announced. This year, the rec teams formed a tunnel on the field after
they were introduced to welcome the Terriers football players.

Officer in a ceremony led by new Command Senior Chief Shawn Wingle, Senior Naval Science
Instructor for the program. He was pinned by his father.

After the first quarter of play, representatives from the Vinton Kroger presented a check for
$1,000 to WBHS. Kroger is known as a “proud partner of local high school football,” supporting
the school, the Town of Vinton, and the surrounding community. Kroger employees
Jennifer Schult and Katie Ewing presented the donation to William Byrd Principal Evan Noell.
