The Cregger Indoor Fieldhouse at Roanoke College was the site of a huge
high school track meet last Thursday. William Byrd athletes were among the
hundreds who competed in the East Coast Elite Meet #4 at the Salem facility on
Thompson Memorial Highway.
DeShawn Austin had the best finish on the day for the Byrd boys’
delegation with a second place finish in the triple jump, covering 45’ 4.5”. Ethan
Haston was fourth in the long jump at 21’10.5 and he was also fourth in the triple
jump at 42’2”.
Austin anchored the 4×200 relay team that finished fourth in 1:36.06. He
was joined by Jerrett Shepherd, Gray Matthews and James Smith. Matthews was
19th in the 55 dash.

Landon Martin took eighth place in the 55 hurdles at 8.32 and Michael
Goins was 12 th in that event at 8.74.
The girls had two strong efforts in the relay events. The 4 x 200 team of
Grace Onwi, Emma Matthews, Lily Perez and Michal Hamlar was runner-up at
1:52.47 and Onwi, Matthews, Hamlar and Thalia Green took third in the 4×400 in
4:31.96.
Perez also took fifth place in the high jump, clearing 4’9.5”. Aubrey
Booze was seventh in the pole vault at 6’11 ¾”.

This weekend the Terriers will be heading to Lynchburg to compete in the
Bulldog Invitational at Liberty University, hosted by Liberty Christian Academy.
