Skylar Fitzgerald, a junior at William Byrd High School, and member of the Burton Center for
Arts and Technology chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is
representing her community is a positive way by serving as the current Virginia FCCLA 1st Vice
President.
She was elected by her peers in April 2023, and has spent the last 10 months leading youth
members from all over Virginia in workshops and trainings and connecting with national officers
and congressmen to advocate for FCCLA and Family and Consumer Sciences education.
Her major events and accomplishments thus far include:
- Leadership training at National Leadership Conference (July 2023, Denver, Colorado)
Advocating for FCCLA/FCS at Capitol Leadership Conference (October 2023,
Washington, D.C.) - Leading College Day Workshops for youth members (October-November 2023, Virginia
Tech and Virginia State University) - Earning 1st Place in competitive events at National Fall Conference (November 2023,
Birmingham, Alabama)
Fitzgerald made an impressive presentation to the School Board at their meeting on Feb. 22 and announced that she is now running for national FCCLA office.

- Presenting and facilitating workshops and sessions at Virginia State Leadership and
Recognition Conference (April 12-14, 2024, Virginia Beach)
FCCLA is the ultimate leadership experience for students enrolled in Family and Consumer
Sciences across the nation. It is the only national in-school organization with the family as its
central focus. Participation in state and national programs and chapter activities helps members
become strong leaders in their families, careers, and communities.
