William Byrd sophomore Lindsay Murtaugh took a third and fourth in the Class 3
state swim meet last Saturday. Murtaugh was one of 11 Byrd swimmers who competed at
the SwimRVA pool in Richmond.
The Terriers finished 17th among 26 teams in the girls’ meet and 26th among 32 in
the boys’ meet as Western Albemarle dominated, sweeping both the girls’ and boys’ team
championships. Murtaugh scored most of the points for the girls with a third place finish
in the 500 freestyle race with a time of 5:05.24 and a fourth in the 200 free in 1:54.21.
“Lindsay is a very talented distance swimmer and she’s great at racing,” said Byrd
coach Krista Martin.
Murtaugh also swam on the girls 200 medley relay team with Cary Jones, Gabby
Romeo and Addison Collins. They qualified for the “B” final, and finished 15 th in the
state to score four points for the team. The B race is for the eight teams with the next best
times who did not qualify for the eight team final.
Two boys’ relay teams also swam in the “B” race. The boys 200 free relay team
of Bruno De Melo, Michael Hoyos, Chris Hurd and Blake Richardson finished 14th in the
state and the 400 free relay team of Richardson, Hoyos, Cole Kovacevic and Evan
Copening was 15th in the state.
“We had some great swims in prelims, and state is always such a fantastic
opportunity to race,” said Martin. “These 11 swimmers did a terrific job representing
William Byrd High School this past weekend. I’m so proud of them and I hope they
made some great memories.”
Byrd had three seniors competing in the state meet, Hoyos, De Melo and
Kovacevic.
“It was bitter sweet to watch our three senior state team swimmers complete the
last races of their high school career,” said Martin. “All three have come so far and I’m
really going to miss them.”
