Jill Acker has been named as the 2022 Town of Vinton Employee of the Year, a coveted honor in the town. She is the Administrative Manager for the Public Works Department.
Acker was recognized by Vinton Town Council at their meeting on Jan. 3. She had previously been honored at the Employee Holiday Luncheon in December.
“Beginning in 2016, the town of Vinton has asked employees to nominate a co-worker who has gone above and beyond in teamwork, work performance, attitude, and commitment,” said Vinton Human Resources and Risk Management Director Donna Collins, who facilitates the selection each year. “This year’s nominations continue that tradition. 2022’s recipient exemplifies those qualities.”
“Jill began working for the Town on July 1, 2012, in the Public Works Department,” Collins said. “As many of us can attest, there are trials to starting a new position—will I fit in, or can I handle what they ask of me?”
“Jill didn’t have time to consider her own concerns as the community’s concerns were heightened by the chaos and stress from the Derecho that hit our region on June 29, 2012,” Collins said. “Public Works played a pivotal role in helping the community work its way back to normal. And the newest member of the team was essential in that process.”
“Jill is selfless in her actions; she excels at working with citizens and staff in Public Works. She is the ‘go to’ person for everyone for whatever they need. She has a ‘team player attitude.’ She understands what high priority objectives are, and she works diligently to make them happen.”
“She leads by word and example,” Collins said. “Perhaps most importantly, she is dependable, honest, and has an infectious positive attitude.”
“From natural disaster to a pandemic, she always finds a way to come through in the end for all of us.”
Mayor Brad Grose commented that, “We are all very proud of her and her hard work—and she always handles things in such a ladylike manner.” She received a standing ovation from those in attendance including members of her family and the Public Works Department.
Acker thanked the town and her co-workers for the honor, especially “my guys” in the Public Works Department “who I try to look after. They mean the most to me. They’re the ones who should be up here.”
