Chloe Varney and Logan Pekala combined to pitch a no-hitter for the William Byrd softball team in Tuesday’s win over Patrick Henry. The Terriers took a 16-5 win in Vinton.
Varney started the game for the Terriers and allowed one run on no hits over one a third innings, striking out two. Pekala then relieved and went the final three and two thirds innings, allowing four runs but no hits while fanning two more. The game went five innings with Byrd ahead by 11 runs at that point.
The Terriers took control early, putting 10 runs on the board in the second inning. Maddy Tuck, Haleigh Vaughan, Sydney Blewett, Elyssa Kitts, Verity Watkins and Keely Hoal all drove in runs in the big inning. Tuck and Vaughan had multiple hits for the Byrd girls.
The win was the second in a row for the Terriers, who improved to 4-5 on the season. Last Thursday at Hidden Valley the Byrd offense smashed 17 hits in just six innings as they won at Hidden Valley, 18-5.
The homestanding Titans put four runs on the board in the first inning in this one but Hidden Valley couldn’t slow down the Byrd attack. Blewett had four hits and also having big days at the plate were Pekala, Hoal, Vaughan, Brooklyn Peters and Amber Vaughn. Varney pitched all six innings and struck out five.
The Terriers were hoping to keep the momentum going with a game at Bassett on Wednesday. Byrd is at Northside Friday and Saturday they’ll make up a rained out game with Hidden Valley at 2 pm in Vinton.
