When the Lancerlot Sports Complex hosted its first “Macado’s Dog Days of Summer” in 2019, the plan was to make the free community event into an annual happening. That didn’t work out in 2020 due to the pandemic, but on the afternoon of August 21, 2021, the ice rink, the outdoor pool, and the parking lot were packed with dogs and their families – and those thinking about adopting a dog – for the second annual Dog Days.
The event was sponsored by Macado’s restaurant, along with the Town of Vinton and the Vinton Area Chamber of Commerce.
On a summer day with temperatures in the 90s, the “Lot” turned the ice rink into a “cool dog park,” inviting the dogs onto the ice, and opened the outdoor swimming pool to dogs and their owners.
The event also included an “Adopt-a-thon” in conjunction with Angels of Assisi and other local animal adoption centers.
Over 20 animal vendors were on site, providing services, door prizes, and more, along with food vendors for the humans, treats for the pets and music.
Diesel, the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs Hockey team mascot, spent the afternoon greeting dogs and dog owners.
“We couldn’t be happier that over 500 dogs walked through our doors to be a part of the coolest dog event around,” said Lancerlot General Manager Joe Miller. “It brings us great pride to offer such a unique and different activity for our furry little friends. We couldn’t have done this again without the support of Macado‘s, the Town of Vinton, and Vinton Chamber of Commerce. We look forward to hosting again in August 2022.”
