The William Byrd soccer girls broke a scoreless tie with an overtime goal to win at Northside Tuesday, 1-0. The win improved the Terriers record to 10-2 on the season.

“It was a tough game,” said coach Tom Brown. “Northside is a quality team and gave us everything we could handle. The field was a bit slick because of the weather conditions, so I was concerned about players losing their footing defending, which could lead to scoring opportunities.

Katie Corrao scored the only goal of the game and Grace Carroll came up big in the goal for Byrd with 11 saves. Corrao scored in the first overtime period.

“Katie had a big game for us tonight,” said Brown. “She almost scored in regulation (hit the post) and she stepped up to have that game winning goal.”

Last week the Terriers beat Alleghany, 4-1, in Vinton. Madison Moses had two goals and Lexi Williams and Carroll had one each, with Jeanette Sako assisting on three of the goals. Kathryn Woodson also had an assist and Gracie Tyus made two saves.

“We created a lot more scoring opportunities than the score would suggest, so overall I am pleased with our play and, of course, the result,” said Brown. “Allegheny is the type of team that no matter the score, they will keep bringing their best effort.”

The Terriers were scheduled to play at Lord Botetourt Wednesday in a battle of Blue Ridge District unbeatens. The girls are home to Alleghany on Friday.
