Herman L. Horn Elementary School celebrated the season with a Spring Fling on the evening of April 7. The event was planned and facilitated by the New Member Class of the Junior League of the Roanoke Valley (JLRV).
There was a carnival atmosphere with the cafeteria, library, and hallways packed with families playing good old-fashioned, but life-size, games of Connect Four, Twister, Tic Tac Toe, Kerplunk, and Hungry Hippos. Tickets purchased allowed students to participate in the games and to raise funds for the PTA.
In addition to the games, there was face painting, a ping pong relay, Hula Hoops, musical chairs, a bake sale/craft sale by the SCA, candy jar guessing, and concessions for sale from Domino’s and Jimmy Johns.
The adults enjoyed the silent auction for which classrooms created themed baskets, JLRV donated themed baskets, and local businesses donated items.
According to HLH teacher Chrystin Sheffield, who is a Junior League member, the JLRV was established in 1927 as a volunteer organization for women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.
Sheffield aid that in years past, Spring Fling was an annual fundraiser organized by the school’s PTA, but with busy family schedules and the number of PTA volunteers declining, the beloved event fell to the wayside. This year, thanks to the JLRV, the tradition has been revived. HLH Principal Peggy Stovall hopes it will become an annual event once again.
New Member JLRV “Done in a Day” community project co-chairs Sheffield and Donna Wagner sent several applications out throughout the Roanoke area seeking opportunities to help local communities.
Stovall and Assistant Principal Leanne Leftwich filled out the application and were selected.
All proceeds from the extremely well-attended Spring Fling will go to support the PTA. Its funds go directly to Herman L. Horn students.
The Junior League of Roanoke Valley is a member of the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI). The AJLI, Inc. reaches out to women of all races, religions and national origins who demonstrate an interest in and commitment to voluntarism.
