The William Byrd girls got in the soccer win column last Friday with a 3-0 win over Bassett. The girls held the Bengals to just one shot in a game played at Byrd.

“I really thought we moved the ball much better and were able to get 17 shots off,” said coach Tom Brown. “The defense really played well as a unit.”

Grace Carroll was in goal for Byrd. Kelly O’Connor  and Kayland Bond scored first half goals, with Lexi Williams assisting on the first goal and O’Connor getting an assist on Bond’s goal. Jeanette Sako scored a second half goal for some insurance, with Hannah Schram getting the assist.

On Tuesday the Terriers were in Hidden Valley, where they hoped to avenge an opening day loss from the week prior. It didn’t materialize, as the Titans took a 4-1 win to sweep the season series.

“We went down 2-0 in the first half and the girls had a decision to make as to whether or not they wanted to get back in the game,” said Brown. “They picked up their intensity and effort and made it a 2-1 game.”

Williams had the goal, assisted by O’Connor. Howeever, that’s as close as the Terriers would come.

“I don’t think the score really depicted how well we played,” said Brown. “Our possession improved drastically over the week before.  The girls were connecting passes and had Hidden Valley under pressure.  We just need to get better with our finishing, but that will come.”

Now 1-2, the girls will be back in action Monday at Bassett. A game at Lord Botetourt was postponed due to weather last week and will be made up May 7.
