The William Byrd tennis teams opened their seasons on Monday against Roanoke County rival Glenvar. The girls won their match at Glenvar, 5-3, but the boys lost at home, 8-1.
Singles winners for the girls included number two Hannah Shelton, number three Chanisara “Far” Jantarat, number four Allison Faulkner and number six Maddie Craig. Shelton and Kaidyn Settles won at number one doubles to clinch the win.
The boys didn’t fare as well but many of the matches were close. Three losses came from tie-break games.
“The score is somewhat deceptive as the teams were very well matched,” said coach Patrick Elwell. “Both teams’ players performed exceptionally in some hard-fought matches.”
Both teams are back in action Friday against Staunton River. The girls will be home and the boys play in Moneta.
