Baseball was back last week as Salem Memorial Park in Salem played host to the Commonwealth Games 13-and-Under tournament last weekend. Included in the field were the Star City Sluggers, with six Vinton boys on the team.
Vinton is coached by William Byrd graduate Brian Rickerson, assisted by Travis McLaughlin and Vinton’s Mike Haithcock. Vinton boys on the team include Hunter Obenchain, Cooper Minnix, Torin Bundy, Hayden Eads, Kyland Spence, and Landon Haithcock.
The won the Silver medal in the Silver bracket among a large field of team. Star City was denied a chance to play for the championship when the final game was rained out late Sunday afternoon. Final standings were decided by seedings of the remaining teams, giving the Sluggers the Silver medal.
It was just the second tournament of the season for the Sluggers due to the coronavirus, as they finished second in Greensboro the prior weekend. Their next tourney is the weekend of June 27 in West Virginia.
